Understanding Information and Communication Technology and Its Application

Understanding Information Technology (IT) - IT is a new term or term that has recently become popular in Indonesia, what is IT and what is the function of this IT? IT or in full is called ICT consists of two words, namely information and communication. According to Wikipedia, Information and Communication Technology is a broad umbrella term covering all technical tools for processing and conveying information.

Meanwhile, the definition of ICT according to experts is as follows;

  • Eric Deeson states, Information & Communication Technology is a human need to retrieve and transfer, process and process information in a social context that benefits oneself and society as a whole.
  • Susanto said that Information & Communication Technology is a media/tool used for data transfer, either to obtain data/information or to provide information to other people and can be used as a means of communicating either one-way or two-way.
  • Haag and Keen (1996) mention information technology is a set of tools used to assist tasks related to data/information processing.
  • Williams and Sawyer (2005) state that information technology is any technology that helps produce, manipulate, store, communicate, and/or convey information.
  • Oxford English Dictonary states that information technology is hardware and software and can include networks and telecommunications which are usually in a business or business context.

In general, Information technology covers all aspects related to the process of manipulating and managing information such as cameras and communication technology covering all aspects related to the delivery of information such as newspapers, websites or cellphones.

There are six IT functions, including:

  • Capture (capture all data/information which will then be processed.
  • Processing (processing some data to be used as valid information)
  • Generating (generating or converting the information into useful and easy-to-understand forms such as reports, graphs)
  • Storage (storing data/information to a storage medium for later use)
  • Retrival (the process of searching back various data that previously entered the storage process on the storage media)
  • Transmission (transmit / transfer of data from one device to another via a wired or wireless network)

History of Information and

Computer programs have actually been known since the early 1800s. At that time Augusta Lady Byron and Charles Babbage wrote the computer program that became the forerunner of the first digital computer called ENIAC I in the early 1900s.

  • In the same century, several telematics experts at that time had developed several technologies, including;
  • Samuel Morse and Sir William Cook developed the telegraph and Morse language to transmit information over long distances via cable in 1837.
  • In 1861 people were already thinking about the appearance of information in visual form on the screen surface. Currently, the distribution of information in the form of projections to screen media is being launched for the first time.
  • In 1877, Alexander Graham Bell developed a telephone that was used to convey information over long distances. Today, Graham Bell's telephone is in general use.

In the early 1900s, knowledge in the field of ICT continued to be developed with the aim of sending information for the benefit of World War II. As a result, the first tube TV was launched in 1923 by Zvorkyn, and in 1948 the ENIAC I digital computer was launched.
Since then, computer and network technology has continued to be developed to give birth to several projects such as; DARPA, CSNET, IETF, ARPANET and so on.

In the early 1990s, CERN introduced the Internet with the WWW network protocol. Since this time, the development of information and communication technology is growing rapidly, through the internet there are various well-known media that play a role in the process of delivering information accurately.

Application of Information and Communication Technology in Life

In this millennial era, information seems to be transparent. Everyone seems to be able to find out any information easily and quickly. The impact is in the following things:

1. In the field of Education

The development of the delivery of information in the world of education has also increased. The application of ICT in education can be seen in the shift from conventional learning systems to digital learning systems.

Where learning materials have been summarized in an Ebook or Apps that allow students and teachers to access them without buying books. Of course the delivery of this model will be more accurate, faster, and cheaper. As long as there is an internet network, we can access the same learning materials anywhere.

2. Health Sector

The use of Information Technology in the health sector can be seen in the use of smart cards. This system is used to find out the history of the patient's illness who comes to the hospital, before that the doctor will update what history the patient has suffered to this card. So that when the patient goes to the hospital, the doctor will be easier and more accurate in determining the next step.

3. Banking Sector

In the banking world, there are many applications of this technology. One of them is internet banking. With internet banking, we can make transactions through our smartphones without going to an ATM. Of course it will be easier and more efficient. Another example is E-money, we usually find this on toll roads or public transportation (KRL/TransJakarta). By using this Emoney, the transaction time will be faster, thereby increasing the value of its effectiveness.

4. Business Field

In the business world, the development of IT has shifted the buying and selling process towards digital. We can see this, the proliferation of startups in our country and the rise of E-Commerce in our country.

5. Company/Agency Sector

The application of Information Technology is also widely applied to large companies. This is due to the demands of time and cost efficiency on the company. Call it the fingerprint system. This system will automatically detect the presence of company employees, the fingerprint system can accurately record the time of arrival and departure of employees.

Another example is the implementation of Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP). ERP is an application that includes a management system within the company. With these digital systems, time and cost efficiency will increase.

This is a complete article on the understanding and application of information and communication technology (ICT) in everyday life. How, already understand about the meaning and function of IT? if you have, don't forget to also read other related articles to know more about the IT world. That's all and hopefully useful for all of us.
